Academy of Art University Gives Students Real World Runway Exposure

The Academy of Art University is a private school in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1929, and currently claims to be the largest privately owned art and design school in the United States. It has around 12,600 students and almost 1500 teachers.

Recently, students graduating from the Academy of Art University were able to present their creations to professionals in the design and fashion industry. This is an annual event that gives students the opportunity to experience a real runway and all the pageantry that goes along with it. This is a way to help students prepare for their future outside of college.

The Academy of Art has a 100% acceptance rate. It has accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The school offers around 25 subjects and allows students to earn associates, bachelors, and masters degrees in them. It also offers some online courses.

At their spring show, their graduating class had students from China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Mexico, Vietnam, South Korea, and of course the United States. This thoroughly diverse population is similar to the population of the fashion world. All walks of life are pulled towards a career in fashion design.

About 58% of the Academy’s students are female, and they boast a diverse culture. They have students from 112 different countries in total. Despite being an art school, their sports teams are members of the Pacific West Conference, and compete in a total of nine different sports.

They try to provide their students with as much confidence as possible. That is where their annual spring runway show comes into play. The experience has helped some students prepare for things like competing on the Lifetime television series “Project Runway“. Students that graduate from the Academy of Art University come away with highly developed skill sets and confidence to get the job done. They also do their best to give students help in finding their own fashion identity, aesthetic and vision. All of which are important aspects in fashion.

Orange Coast College Is Opening A New Eco-Friendly Designed Recycling Center

Orange Coast College (OCC) recently built a new recycling center that costed over $7 million to build and is about 5 acres in size, which is about five times the size of the previous smaller recycling facility that the school had. People from all over California can come to the recycling center to recycle anything from glass, plastic, aluminum cans, unwanted equipment, metal scraps, and old appliances and can also drop off cardboard as well as magazines. The facility pays the standard California Redemption value for recyclables and also will take cooking oils and old clothes that people no longer need.

The recycling center has an eco-friendly design that relies on building materials as well as lighting that reduces the impact the facility has on the environment. It is paid for by a spread of private and public donors as well as funding from CR&R Environmental Services, which is a company that helps to inform locals about recycling and has had two classrooms named after their founder Cliff Ronnenberg and his wife Janet. Many local government officials as well as the mayor of Costa Mesa, herself, had good things to say about the recycling center, and the fact that it is just one part of a larger part to revitalize the college is exciting to many locals in the area.

Orange Coast College (OCC) is in Costa Mesa California and has a 164-acre campus that was founded in 1947. Its one of the largest community colleges in the United States, which accepts over 25,000 every semester and is ranked number #1 out of all of the community colleges in Orange County for how many students it transfers to the University of California and the California State University systems. The college, itself, provides students with over 135 career and academic programs and more than 50% of the students who go to the school are enlisted in the technical and career education programs offered there. The goal of OCC is to offer cheaper education for people who are looking to work in a specific trade or skilled profession as well as those who are looking to complete lower-division course work in order to transfer to a University. In the latter capacity, OCC is one of the top-ranked transfer schools in the country, and out of the over 5,000 community colleges in the U.S. it ranks number 65 in awarding associate degrees to its students. OCC has been recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges as a fully accredited educational institution.
